since steve and i had weddings 4/5 weekends in october of 2009 we vowed to make the most of our favorite fall season this year and get outside, explore and be active. so saturday marked our first open weekend and i planned an exciting bike tip out west for the covered bridge festival. online i found some seemingly reasonable bike routes for us to try, however upon arrival in rockville we learned that what i had picked would be a 31 mile round trip ride. steve and i loaded up on optimism and took off, helmets on, for our adventure in cycling. we soon realized (by soon i mean 10 minutes into the ride) that the route was a hilly, curve filled narrow country road that offered no shoulder or actual lane for bikes resulting in a hard blow to our original optimistic outlooks. after holding up 20+ cars at a time, being yelled & honked at (seriously, people were not receptive to an environmentally friendly alternative to get around the festival and felt at ease letting us know!), and sweating our booties off in 85 degree weather we decided to wrap up our trip a little early. we rode for a couple hours and didn't feel bad about getting off the road....at least i didn't. i honestly thought i was going to find myself waking up in the parke county hospital from a car vs. bike accident. thank goodness that wasn't the case and i walked away from my bike unscathed!!
the only downfall is that i wasn't able to take any pictures on our ride, mostly b/c i knew that my safety was already in jeopardy and i didn't want to increase my already unfavorable odds of injury by holding a camera & balancing my bike while trying to capture God's outdoor handiwork. all in all it was an awesome trip and we met some super friendly people peddling their crafts in and around the festival. next weekend....apple orchard with a stop in the pumpkin patch...woohoo!
